Spring Lake and
its History
Spring Lake NJ is a
Borough in Monmouth
County that is rich
in history and
culture, and has
remained a popular
resort on the Jersey
Shore for more than
100 years. Residents
and visitors enjoy
the unhurried
atmosphere that
makes
Spring Lake
New Jersey so
unique, as well as
our picturesque
beaches, shopping,
and dining
opportunities. The
architecture of many
of the homes and
buildings in Spring
Lake date back to
the turn of the 20th
century, and lines
the wide tree-lined
streets throughout
Spring Lake. The
lake is named for
the crystal clear
water that supplies
it from a multitude
of underground
springs.
Spring Lake is the
perfect place to
escape. Our
picturesque resort
town is just 65
miles from New York
and Philadelphia,
but offers a welcome
change of pace from
the hustle and
bustle of city life.
There are no traffic
lights or parking
meters, and no need
to hurry. Spring
Lake’s two mile
boardwalk is
different from those
to the south, as it
is uncluttered by
superfluous shops
and rich in history.
Our
Spring Lake NJ
Bed and Breakfast
is
one of 11
Victorian-style inns
in Spring Lake that
feature breathtaking
architecture. Most
of these inns began
as private homes,
and several
Hollywood movies
have been filmed
here to take
advantage of the
unique backdrop
afforded by our turn
of the century
architecture.
Spring
Lake NJ is the only
town in the United
States with two
complete structures
that were standing
during the 1876
Centennial
Exposition in
Philadelphia. The
history museum
itself is housed in
a building that
dates back to 1897
which started as a
school and served as
a Masonic meeting
place during the
1950’s.
Another popular
historic landmark in
Spring Lake is the
Sea Girt lighthouse,
which opened on Dec.
10th, 1896 after
almost 100 vessels
sunk off the New
Jersey coast in 10
years. The nations
first fog beacon was
introduced here in
1921. Our lighthouse
is also the nation’s
last live-in
lighthouse, and
today is a museum
filled with rare
maritime artifacts.
Many of these
artifacts come from
the Morro Castle, a
cruise ship that
caught fire on
September 8, 1934
off the Jersey
Coast.
Spring Lake
New Jersey
lifeguards were
among those who
helped bring
survivors to shore.
Three years later,
Spring Lake was
involved in another
historic disaster
when townspeople
assisted in the
rescue when the
Hindenburg zeppelin
burned in Lakehurst.
Spring Lake truly is
an excellent place
to escape, whether
you’re a history
buff, or just
looking for some
peace and quiet.
